1. Outline the issue in YOUR case study (CS). What is the incidence of slavery there? What is its pattern and scope? Do YOU find evidence of commoditization/ commoditization of human beings? Bonded labor is a common form of slavery where individuals are forced to work to pay off loans their employer claims they owe. These debts are passed on from generation to generation. It has existed for hundreds of years worldwide but particularly in Africa, the Caribbean and in South-East Asia. It became increasingly popular when the Transatlantic Trade Route was abolished . There were approximately 18 to 20.5 million bonded laborers in the world at the end of 2011, almost 90% of who were in South Asia. In India they have legally banned the caste system however it still exists socially. Bonded labor predominantly affects the Dalits in the Punjab region, these people are also known as the Untouchables. The Untouchables are considered the lowest caste in India. Their labor mainly consists of physical work such as agriculture, working brick kilns, mills and factories. The bonded laborers' employers treat their workers like commodities by overcharging them for their necessities. These fees may include and not limited to their cost of their journey, finding them a job, food, clothing, soap, medical aid etc. Unlike in more developed countries these people are not given any health or social benefits and are not fairly compensated for their work. 2. What is “slavery”? What type of slavery is YOUR case study about? Explain if YOUR case study (CS) meets the definition of slavery. Slavery is the act of controlling another person's or people's will to determine their life course and rewards for their sacrifices. This applies to the bonded laborers in India because their employers are controlling them by keeping them in debt, with the motive of keeping them as an employee for life. The employers are benefitting from them but are not compensating them fairly for their efforts. They are kept in debt
