Thursday 21 August 2014 – Term 3 Week 5 Confident, connected, actively involved, lifelong learners striving for excellence Maori Art Sculptures Through the gate, past the construction site, behind the creaky sliding doors, was an old pool enclosure full of limestone and children. Inside the pool enclosure children are suited up with safety goggles and white breathing masks strapped around their necks like there was a new disease break out. They were armed with chisels and hammers, cracking and chipping away at the big blocks of limestone. Dust was ground into the concrete slabs and low chatting filled the room, overpowered by the grating sound of saws and sandpaper. People worked together in teams of 3, at nine plastic tables, with 4 sturdy table legs. Children were carving Maori designs into the precious Oamaru stone. By Narissa – Room 14 Tarata Maori Art Sculptures At the corner of the field, near the tall grown hedge, behind heavy sliding doors, stood nine squared wooden tables. When you take your first step into the pool enclosure you’re snowed on by thin pale dust. Room 13 students are in worn ragged clothes that now are white, tight facemasks and clear safety glasses. You’ve hit the loud sound wave of sawing, sanding and smashing big solid blocks of limestone that are slowly converting into graceful Maori art sculptures. Curling up in the laundry, I am lying on my side. My ears are listening hard. Tegan is looking for me. I am too hard to find. By Keely - Room 3 Matai The Twelve Labours of Heracles Heracles was half-man and half-god, although he didn’t know that. When Heracles was born his mother, Hera, was very jealous so she tried to kill him. She put six snakes into his cot but he crushed them quick as a flash. One day Zeus sent Heracles to earth to be safe with an earth family and safe from Hera. He was way too big to be human, so his earth father told him he was a god, well half. The evil King Eury and Hera plotted to kill Heracles so they set him 12 Labours, very hard ones. In the end Heracles had big adventures, made great new friends and got rid of some nasty creatures. Retold by Sam - Room 6 Manuka
