e g Page 3 Family Ministry SARA MCCAW FAMILY MINISTER Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” John 8:31&32 Humans wrote the Bible to tell the story of God working in the world. Sometimes the stories have inconsistencies that may be errors. Do those inconsistencies mean that the Bible is not true? Absolutely not! The stories of the Bible are not meant to be read as factual accounts as one would read news releases, and facts are often influenced by people’s perspective and change as the stories unfold. The Bible is a book of faith. Does it matter that the Biblical explanation for the creation of the world does not match our scientific knowledge of the world? Does science prove that the Biblical account is untrue? How could all humanity come from only two people— Adam and Eve? How could Noah have fit every species of animal on the ark, and wouldn’t the predators have eaten some of the others? These are questions that our kids contemplate. Are the stories true? Should we believe them? YES, YES, YES! Just as novels can speak the truth about human relationships, the Bible speaks the truth about God’s relationship with us. We believe the stories because they were given to us by people who wanted us to know God and how God was active in their lives and in the world. The Bible tells us the truth of God’s love for us and the truth of God’s salvation for us. Another thing that surprised the confirmation students was that the people in the Bible are not perfect. They are flawed humans like us, some of whom were very naughty and selfish. They are people with whom we can identify. Their stories are our stories. Their stories are true. They happened and continue to happen all of the time. Jesus said that through his life and ministry, we would “know the truth and the truth would set us free.” We are free because the Bible tells us that nothing can separate us from God’s love and salvation. Thank God for that truth!! In Christ, Sara What is Truth? Every once in a while, I go through spurts where I voraciously read books written by the same author. When I was in middle school, I read as many books by John Steinbeck as I could find. A few years ago, I read many books written by Wendell Berry. I am drawn to these authors because they develop great characters. I have to care about and identify with the characters or the book will not capture my interest. The other reason that I love these authors is that they write the truth. Yes, their works are fiction, but the stories are true. They are stories about the human spirit, relationships, and communities, and they are true. While our stories may not be exactly like the stories of the characters in novels, the same stories did happen and do happen to people all of the time. Reading novels like these help us to grow and learn about ourselves and the world around us. Last month, Intern Pastor Carter and I had the privilege of leading seven of our sixth grade students on a confirmation retreat. We had a discussion about “How Lutherans Read the Bible.” The students were especially interested in the Lutheran belief that the Bible is not inerrant. That belief surprised some of the students. How could the holy book—God’s Word— have errors? We explained that Lutherans believe that the Bible was undoubtedly inspired by God, but not dictated.
