Manufacturing Offers in-DeManD careers PMMI’s JumpStart initiative was developed to help achieve that goal: to fortify and grow the manufacturing workforce so our industry remains viable and strong today and in the decades to come. JumpStart links packaging and processing companies and their customers with students in their local areas in an effort to inspire youth to choose a career in packaging and processing. One thing JumpStart aims to do is set the record straight: Manufacturing is cool. Why? Because it involves things kids love: robotics, automation, solving problems, creativity, and a chance to make good money. Jobs, such as mobile hydraulics engineer, packaging technician, and electrician, offer real opportunities to do work that help people, even save lives. Is that a stretch? Not really. Think pharmaceuticals, medical- testing equipment, and the fresh and frozen food we eat every day. HOw JuMpstart wOrks Formed in 2013, JumpStart is operated through individual groups located in regions across the United States. Membership is open to PMMI Member Companies and their customers, and currently 14 companies in the greater Chicago and SE Wisconsin areas participate in this program. Any PMMI Member Company can start a new group or join one already formed. JumpStart volunteers reach out to local middle schools and high schools to fnd opportunities where they can educate and inspire kids about packaging and processing. When developing outreach plans for youth, JumpStart targets its outreach not only to kids but to major inuences in their lives—parents and grandparents, teachers, guidance counselors, and school administrators, so that they, too, understand the advancements in manufacturing and what it offers young people. It is also advantageous for volunteers to focus on community centers, libraries, and gyms where youth frequent. “ I have a real passion for education. JumpStart is a great opportunity to reach out to students who are good in math and science but don’t really know how to apply it in the real world. Educating these students about packaging and the careers it offers is very important to the future of our industry.” Dustin Lee, Midwest regional sales manager, Morrison Container Handling Solutions, and member of JumpStart Chicago
