Treehouse Theater said Monday it will put on a free reading of the film’s script on Dec. 27, giving “an opportunity for people to come together in the name of free speech, in defiance of all who have threatened it.” Sony Pictures canceled the release of the movie “The Inter- view,” a comedy that revolves around the assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, after receiving threats of terrorist attacks from hackers. The Tree- house production will feature members of the comic Upright Cit- izen’s Brigade theater and will be held in its 50-seat theater. China indicts Jackie Chan’s son on drug charge BEIJING (AP) — Chinese pros- ecutors on Monday indicted the son of Hong Kong action film star Jackie Chan on the charge of shel- tering others to use drugs, more than four months after he was detained. If convicted, singer-actor Jaycee Chan could be jailed for up to three years. Chan, 32, was among a string of celebrities detained over the summer for vices such as drug use and hiring prosti- tutes, as Beijing vowed to clean up social morals. Chan’s case has been particularly embarrassing for his more famous father, who was named by Beijing as an anti-drug ambassador in 2009. Beijing police detained the younger Chan at his Beijing apartment in August along with Taiwanese movie star Ko Kai. Theater to read ‘The Interview’ birthdays Actor-co- median Harry Shearer is 71. NEW YORK (AP) — Joe Cocker , the raspy-voiced British singer known for his fren- zied cover of “With a Little Help From My Friends,” the teary ballad “You Are So Beau- tiful” and a contorted performing style uncannily parodied by John Belushi on “Saturday Night Live,” has died. He was 70. His London-based agent, Barrie Marshall , said Cocker died Monday of lung cancer in Colorado, where he has lived for the past two decades. Cocker, an interpreter more than a writer, became a star through his dazzling transformation of the Beatles’ “With a Little Help From My Friends.” Featuring a gospel-styled arrangement and furious call and response between Cocker and the backup singers, the song became a No. 1 hit in England and the highlight of his characteristically manic set at the Woodstock festival in 1969. In a statement Monday, Paul McCartney remem- bered hearing Cocker’s cover of the song he and John Lennon co-wrote for Ringo Starr and finding it “just mind blowing.” today’s quiz Isaac Asimov’s Super Quiz Subject: “A CHRISTMAS CAROL” -- NO. 1 The ques- tions are based on the novel.
