As you may have read in the Winter 2011 issue of The Forum, after five wonderful years as editor, Dr. Lloyd Fisher has decided to hand the reins over to me. As your new editor, I’d like to take the opportunity to briefly introduce myself. I am a pediatric hospitalist at Emerson Hospital in Concord, Massachusetts, and I run a small nonprofit dedicated to improving early learning. I was raised in the Boston area and aside from college in Philadelphia, have lived, studied, and worked in Massachusetts all of my life. Today, my husband and I live in Medford and spend much of our leisure time walking, snowshoeing, kayaking, or otherwise meandering through the Middlesex Fells. During my medical education, I became very interested in health care policy, systems change, and patient advocacy. Throughout my medical career, I have been active in various groups, committees, and campaigns to improve patient care and ensure that physicians have a voice in the health care laws written. As the first legislative liaison for Residents and Fellows Day at the State House, I am thrilled to see how this wonderful program has grown and encourage you all to learn more about it (see page 1). Last fall, Dr. Greg Hagan asked me to take over the editorship of The Forum from Dr. Fisher, and I welcomed the opportunity to learn from and share with all of you. I encourage all members to contribute articles and suggestions to The Forum . I would especially like to extend that invitation to our younger members, including the residents and medical students, who are the future of our chapter. If you would like to submit an article or you have any suggestions regarding changes you would like to see made to the The Forum , please feel free to contact me at alight@mcaap.org. I look forward to hearing from you. — Anne Light, MD edto’s ote Meet the New Editor of Te Forum President’s Message continued from page 1 • $1.3 billion less for community health centers • $2.5 billion less (a 62.5 percent decrease) for the Community Services Block Grant program, which funds many of the social services agencies and supports for the most vulnerable children and families Here in the Commonwealth we face our own formidable challenges. In addition to broad concerns about the impact of pay ment reform on children and child health, we must also contend with very specific looming cuts. The governor’s budget in cludes a proposed 27percent cut to the Early Intervention (EI) Program — one that, if approved, will force the program to operate at its lowest level of funding in more than 10 years. In addition, long waiting lists for EI services may soon be a reality in spite of federal law that man dates coverage. As pediatricians, we have a unique re sponsibility to defend and promote the needs of children. We know that invest ments in child health are associated with huge returns on investment and are criti cal to maintaining our social and eco nomic health as a state and a nation. The well being of children and families should not be a partisan issue. Children are not just budgetary “lowhanging fruit.” We cannot passively sit by and watch as the interests of children are dashed just because it’s the easiest thing to cut. If we are to live up to our mission, if we are “committed to the attainment of optimal physical, mental, and social health for all infants, children, adoles cents, and young adults,” we must remain focused on advancing a positive child and familycentered agenda. We will need to be engaged on a local, state, and national level, as well as within our everyday practice settings. The chapter may need to call on members to help articulate and reinforce our message in the political arena. We have our work cut out for us, but our most vulnerable patients are depending on us. — Greg Hagan, MD, FAAP 2 The Forum spring 2011 Submissions for the next issue of The Forum should be sent to alight@mcaap.org by June 6, 2011.
