"Is the movie Australia representative of Australia (the country) or is it a Hollywood version of reality?" In the movie Australia , the representation of both the climate and the story of the Indigenous Australians is questionable as reality, and can be seen as an exaggeration of the real conditions in the country. The movie is set between 1939 and 1942, and follows the story of an English aristocrat who inherits a cattle ranch station called 'Faraway Downs' in Kununurra, Western Australia. She reluctantly pacts with a stock-man in order to protect her new property from a takeover plot, and the pair drive 2,000 head of cattle over unforgiving landscape. The film shows dramatized versions of true events around the early to mid-20th Century, such as the bombing of Darwin during World War II. It also references the Stolen Generation, and the discrimination against Aboriginals, both very real experiences in Australian history. Kununurra is located inside the Kimberley region in Western Australia, just outside of the Northern Territory border. The Kimberley region is an area of 423,517 square kilometres, which consists of the ancient, steep-sided mountain ranges of north-western Australia cut through with sandstone, limestone gorges and steep ridges. The southern end of the Kimberley beyond the Dampier Peninsula is flatter with dry tropical grassland, and is used for cattle ranching. The Kimberley is one of the hottest parts of Australia, with the average annual mean temperature around 27 °C for the year. The hottest part of the year is November before the rains break, when temperatures frequently reach well over 40 °C inland.
