Hey Stevie, thanks for meeting with me. Why don’t we start with your childhood? What was it like growing up in your house? It was normal, you know? We moved around a lot, but my home is Texas. My parents were good, working folks. I did kid stuff, so did my brother. But we both fell in love with music too. I wanted to play the saxophone once, but when I saw my brother play the guitar, that was it. Speaking of your home, when you think of Texas, what do you think about? Mexican food. [Laughs] When you’re out on the road, and you’re out on the road a lot, what is it that you miss most about Texas, other than Mexican food? My wife mostly. And my house, and my dog. But those are very… private things. I’ll tell you about a place in Austin that I can’t go very long without seeing, it’s called Antone’s. I’ve seen so many there. I saw Albert Collins and Albert King at the same time. That place means a lot to me. Why do you choose to live in Austin today? Before the band was touring, we went after every gig we could find. If you wanted to play a gig, in most cities they’d hand you a list of the top 40 most popular songs. If you didn’t play those, you didn’t have a gig. In Austin, they let you play what you want. That’s why I moved there, and that’s why a lot of musicians moved there. It seems that, inevitably, whenever you ask someone what their favorite city in Texas is, their answer is always Austin. Why do you think that is? Yah, well it’s the last place that’s not all money. It’s got hills, it’s got lakes, it’s got people. Real people that are more than just fashion and the up-and-coming. They appreciate people doing their own thing. The music that is just starting to be recognized from Austin has been there for years and years and years. The music’s got roots, and the city has soul. A lot of Blues and Soul musicians, from all over Texas - not just Austin - seem to play, jam, and work together collectively. Exactly. That’s what it’s all about. If we’re not pulling each other up, then we’re not doing anything. What good is a king without a throne, you know? There seems to be a lot of Texas guitar players. Can you spot a Texas guitar player? How do you? There’s not a how, you just hear it. There’s a lot of gut feeling there. I’m glad to say – this may sound funny to a lot of Texas people – but I’m glad to see that that’s spreading out to a lot of other places. That influence. Not just throughout the States, but throughout the world. There are people that are really understanding what’s going on and picking up on those feelings and that sound.
