- A “fly on the wall” show, featuring real people. Examples: Celebrity Big Brother, So You Think You Can Dance, Dancing on Ice, American Idol, Britain’s Got Talent. Distribution methods Most Hollywood Feature Films (see below) are commonly distributed via cinemas where people can get first access to see the film. However a lot of this is changing now with the introducing of websites such as Netflix which stream movies on a subscription service to your devices such as a smartphone or laptop right at the access of your home rather than travelling to a cinema to watch it. The advantage with this is that you would usually have to wait for a DVD copy of the film to be able to watch it at home but as technology is changing so is the way we interact and watch media. Here are just a couple examples of films and how they were distributed… Feature Film Guardians of the Galaxy ( Director: James Gunn, Release: 2014, Theme: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi) Movie theatre, video-on-demand, DVD, Blu-ray Disk Low budget film Blair Witch Project ( Director: Daniel Myrick, Eduardo Sánchez, Release: 1999, Theme: Horror, Mystery) DVD, Movie theatre Keywords IMDb – The ‘Internet Movie Database’ which hosts a wide range of information about films, television programs and video games. They rate content out of 10 stars which is judged entirely by you and other people who have viewed this content. Box office – A term used to refer to the commercial success of a film. The reason for why I have chosen these specific films are that both have completely different budgets which has affected their distribution methods. Guardians of the Galaxy (James Gunn, 2014) was made with a budget of $170 million, achieved an IMDb rating of 8.2 and a box office profit of $772.5 million. Blair Witch Project (Daniel Myrick, Eduardo Sánchez, 1999) was made with a budget of $22,500, achieved an IMDb rating of 6.4 and a box office profit of $248,639,099. Distribution methods can also be different due to the film’s release as Blair Witch Project which was released earlier in 1999. During that time video-on-demand and Blu-ray Disks weren’t around. Budgets can also affect Crew Numbers (See Personnel below). 2. Finance and sources of funding Finance - The management of large amounts of money, especially by governments or large companies.
