Page 2 Issue 7, August 2014 Pause for thought.. Katrina will be the speaker at the ‘Good Dog – Happy Dog’ seminar, organised the HVDWA, on Saturday 6 th September at Cradoc Park, starting at 10:00am. There will be 2 sessions, the first on general training and body language etc., with the second focusing on problem behaviour. This is a fantastic opportunity to hear from an expert and learn how to understand your dog‟s behaviour and help it to become well behaved and happy. If you have a dog with behavioural is- sues, you owe it to yourself and your dog to come along. A sau- sage sizzle and refreshments will be available as well as mer- chandise for sale. It will be a fun and educational day with quizzes and prizes, so bring the kids. Unfortunately dogs cannot come to this event. I T ’ S ALL ABOUT YOU AND YOUR DOG If you enjoy reading 'Tails of the Valley', why not contribute and make it even better? Photos of your dog, a birthday, a story about someone who is a dog lover or any matter which involves dogs or dog owners in the Huon Valley are most welcome. You can email your contribution to info.hvdwa@gmail.com . Please don‟t hesitate to call me on 0412535800 if you have any questions. Happy reading! Rozel Duncan Editor I S YOUR DOG WELL BEHAVED ? Training a dog to be obedient and understand its boundaries will go a long way towards a stress free environment for a dog and its human family. Training can be straight forward with most puppies if you know how to do it. Well run puppy classes are a great way to start early training and socialise a young dog. Obedience clubs and some veterinary clinics run puppy classes. Some dogs however, particularly rescue dogs, are harder to teach. Stress, illness or injury in their earlier life can lead to be- havioural problems such as fear or aggression. Training can seem impossible and frustration on our part compounds the situation. What can you do? Fortunately there are professional Animal Behaviourists who can evaluate a dog‟s issues and ad- vise on the best course of action to correct behavioural problems. One such person is well known veterinary behaviourist, Dr. Katrina Ward BVSc MANZCVS CMAVA. Katrina graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science. She has worked as a veterinar- ian in Australia and England for over 20 years, with all types of animals from turtles to cattle, in all forms from orthopaedic sur- gery to cancer therapy. Since studying behavioural medicine and focusing on the mental welfare of her patients, she has acquired Membership to the Australia and New Zealand College of Veteri- nary Scientists. She is a Chartered Member of the Australian Veterinary Association, member of the International Society of Anthrozoology and President of the Australian Veterinary Behav- iour Interest Group. Her passion is about helping to keep pets and their people to- gether; harmoniously and kindly and to ensure the welfare of all species is respected.
