JEWELRY THROUGH THE CENTURIES GEORGIAN (1790-1831) – Dened by the reigns o our King Georges o England. Nature was a common theme including leaves, trees, fowers and animals. Stone cutting and aceting was in its developmental stages and stones were oten set into sterling with a high karat gold backing. Paste, a lead glass stone, was commonly used as a substitute or genuine gemstones. VICTORIAN (1831-1901) – The reign o Queen Victoria was a diverse period: nely worked gold pieces – oten with granulation work in lovely, intricate detail – an underlying emphasis on sentiment, and motis o hearts, fowers, animals, clasped hands and locks o hair all played important roles. Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, died in 1861 so black enamel and jet jewelry grew in importance, as she remained in ormal mourning until her death. EDWARDIAN (1901-1915) – The reign o King Edward VII brought a new romance dened by lightness and delicacy. This included much ligree work, mostly set in platinum, and ne knie-edge metal work or a lacy emphasis. White stones such as diamonds, moonstones and pearls were most popular, as were demantoid garnet, sapphire and amethyst. ART NOUVEAU (1895-1905) – Characterized by fowing, unreal, asymmetrical lines and an emphasis on women with sensuous bodies and long, undulating tresses. This period also included delicate color and ne enamel work which, when held up to light, appears transparent. ART DECO (1920-1935) – Featuring crisp, geometric patterns and bright color contrasts, this period craved rivolity ater a horric World War I. Common styles included palm tree brooches, long, rope-style necklaces and an obsession with speed and science in diamond greyhound pins, lightning bolts, rockets, etc. RETRO (1940-1950) – Refecting war and post-war eelings and the emergence o the United States as the major world power, large scrolls and bows were common styles. Aquamarine, amethyst, sapphire and especially ruby were widely used and many pieces prominently eatured rose-colored gold. POST RETRO (1950-1969) – With the explosion o the United States as the world’s economic power, jewelry o this period was highly diverse using all types o designs and stones. Reproductions o earlier periods became more prevalent during this era.
