E ven Beatrix Potter did not expect Beatrix Potter to be the naturalist she was. On a late October evening, she wrote in a journal “[n]ow of all hopeless thing s to draw, I should think the very worst is a fine, fat fungus” 3 . Potter didn’t generate the idea herself, she had come upon it after a meeting with highly regarded naturalist Charlie McIntosh. Potter had tried diligently for months to obtain a meeting with McIntosh, as she was looking for suggestions in how to improve her work and how to expand her horizons and grow as an artist. She was in turn introduced the world of fungi and fossils. Like many of her contemporaries, Potter was drawn to natural history as a way to relieve her boredom 3 and began collecting and experimenting with specimen in her home, primarily her kitchen. Encouraged by her family, Potter also studied insects in the Natural History Museum. Not only were her microscopic renditions of the anatomy of a bug appealing to the eye, but they were also extremely scientifically accurate. She was drawn to fungi first by their ephemeral fairy qualities and then by the variety of their shape and color and the challenge they posed to watercolor techniques 3 . Potter used these gained skills in watercolor painting to illustrate many of her beloved children’s books.
