Concert Of The Year ! RON ABRAMSKI returns to play TWO Piano Concertos with the St Helens Sinfonietta, Town Hall, St Helens Saturday 20th September, 7 30 pm T he Sinfonietta’s major concert of the year features not only a 40-strong full orchestra but also a very distinguished pianist, Ron Abramski, who will play a concerto in each half (writes Ted Kirk) . Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1 was written to demonstrate the young composer’s pianistic skills to his admirers in Munich, and a lot of the solo part is unashamed grandstanding, but no one will complain about that! The Piano Concerto by David Forshaw, receiving its first performance, is a different kettle of fish – gritty and compact, rhythmically compelling, brilliantly written for the piano, but without display for its own sake. The Sinfonietta is honoured to present so significant a collaboration of composer and soloist. The two concertos are framed with well- established orchestral favourites: Weber’s magical Oberon Overture; a suite of the magnificent tunes that abound in Bizet’s opera Carmen ; and Smetana’s touching and melodious tribute to his homeland in Vltava , a panorama of the course of a great river.
