They’re all versions of s almagundi , an Elizabethan-style salad made up of a wide selection of ingredients. And that’s just what the Salmagundi Wind Quintet will be offering us on November 1st – a colourful and appetising programme made up of all sorts of musical titbits. The concert opens with Christopher Ball’s Comedy Overture , with the bassoon conjuring up the slapstick antics of a clown, and it ends with an arrangement of one of the best-known tunes in jazz – St Louis Blues . In between, you’ve got Rachmaninoff’s haunting and dream-like Vocalise , the infectious samba rhythm of Tico,Tico , the overture from Iolanthe , the folk rhythms of the last of Dvořák’s Slavonic Dances , Parry-Jones’s evocation of the elemental forces of wind and sea, and Bill Richardson’s arrangement of When Johnny Comes Marching Home , with its echoes of the American Civil War. Add to that three eminently tuneful suites from French composers, Charles Lefebvre, Claude Arrieu and Darius Milhaud (see pages 6 & 7), and you’ve got a wonderful recipe for musical salmagundi . Bon appétit! THE SALMAGUNDI WIND QUINTET Saturday, November 1 st , 7 30 p.m. United Reformed Church
