BOMB THREAT 1. If you observe a suspicious object, which may be a potential bomb on campus, DO NOT HANDLE THE OBJECT! Clear the area and call (478) 301-2911 immediately. 2. If a bomb threat is called in keep the caller on the line as long as it is possible and seems safe to do so. On phones with caller ID, immediately note the phone number and write it down. 3. Any persons receiving a telephone call that a bomb or other explosive device has been placed on campus should obtain as much information from the caller as possible: a. Time of call and the phone line the threat was received b. Description and location of the bomb c. Will the bomb explode? If so, what will cause it to do so? d. Perceived personal characteristics and gender of the person e. Noticeable speech pattern, accent, etc. Is this person calm, angry, laughing, etc? f. Description of any background noise. Do you hear cars, voices, animals, etc? g. Reason bomb was placed on campus. h. Threat style of caller – well-spoken, rehearsed, irrational, incoherent, foul-mouthed, recorded tape message, etc. 4. Notify Mercer Police at 301-2970 as soon as the caller hangs up. Mercer Police will advise you of the proper course of action to take based on the situation. If possible, have another person contact Mercer Police while you keep the caller on the line if it seems safe to do so. 5. Notify your supervisor of the situation after notifying Mercer Police. Supervisors will relay information to higher-level supervisors as appropriate to the situation. 6. The decision to evacuate will be made by Mercer Police. This decision will be made in conjunction with guidance, advice, and instruction from Mercer Police or the appropriate controlling agency. This may or may not involve the activation of any alarms or public announcements. CHEMICAL SPILL For chemical spills in the department: 1. Call (478) 301-2455 (24-hour Health & Safety emergency number) 2. Report your name, location, phone number, the material spilled, possible injuries. 3. Assist injured persons. Isolate contaminated persons. 4. Avoid contamination or chemical exposure. 5. Close doors or control access to spill site. 6. Alert Supervisor and Department Chair. 7. Communicate critical spill information to responders. 8. Follow evacuation instructions precisely.
