Page 2 Mayor’s Message 2015 – A Strategic Year Mayor Blair Skinner On behalf of the Council of the Local Government District of Pinawa, we wish all of the residents of Pinawa a very happy and prosperous 2015. Hopefully, the cold/flu bug going through our homes will move on and we can all get back to enjoying our wonderful community. It has been a very busy summer for Council and we have made significant progress on Pinawa’s priority issues. The coming year is going to be one of strategic importance for Pinawa as your Council prepares the community for future growth over the next 10 plus years: Stable Health Care Stable health care continues to be a high priority for Council and clearly is a cornerstone for any future growth of Pinawa. The ongoing strategy has three components. First, recruitment of at least two new physicians through our partnership with the Interlake Eastern Regional Health Authority (IERHA) on the Waterford Global project. The goal of this project is to recruit doctors for a minimum 5 year term who will want to do emergency on call and become part of our community. While this pilot project is a key part of the current strategy, it is important to realize that we are always exploring other options for physician recruitment, as well. Second, retention of our current physician and other medical personnel. Your Council and the IERHA are working together on this extremely important aspect of Stable Health Care and recognize that this has generally been overlooked in the past. Third, the development of improved Clinic Space. Work is well underway with the IERHA on developing modern primary health care clinic space for Pinawa. It is recognized that this is an important component for both recruitment and retention of medical personnel and will also result in improved delivery of health care to the patients. The most likely scenario is the conversion of space at the W.B. Lewis Business Centre as it appears space previously vacated by IERHA would be suitable clinic space. This would have the secondary benefit of improving traffic to W.B. Lewis Business Centre which would be beneficial to both current and future businesses located at the centre. If this scenario is realized, the Clinic Space at the Pinawa Medical Centre would become a Walk-In Clinic. One of the physicians, on a rotational basis, would work there to attend to walk in patients, take care of the Pinawa Hospital in patient needs, plus handle any emergencies. Once the goals of this strategy are realized, Pinawa will have Stable Health Care with the Emergency room open 24/7. Pinawa will be an even more desirable place to live. The work of Council will not be over as we will have to be vigilant to make sure we don’t ever end up in this crisis situation again.
