clearly shows us that this magazine was published in the USA, because you wouldn’t need a restaurant guide for America if you lived in the UK. Has the meaning changed over the years and in what ways? GQ was first released in 1931 as Apparel Arts in the United States. It has always been a fashion magazine however when it was first released it was aimed at wholesale buyers and retail seller in the fashion industry to give advice to their customers. Nowadays it is a fashion magazine which is aimed at the male gender in general to help them become cultured. In 1967 the brand changed for Apparel Arts to GQ (Gentleman’s Quarterly) . What judgements do you make about the truth, accuracy or effect of this text? I think that this magazine is very truthful. I think this because it has a reputation they have to maintain about the quality of their contents, therefore this makes me think that what they are saying is going to be the truth because they don’t want to let down their readers. The accuracy levels will be high for the magazine because it is such a top end gentleman’s magazine, this means that reality stories or stories based on weight loss are going to be accurate. As a whole I think that this gives a very good effect to the audience because if people talk about the accuracy and the truth, which adds to the quality, it is more likely to sell more copies. What judgements might other people or groups makes about it? Some people may jump to the conclusion that this is going to be a typical men’s magazine which feature topless girls and technology, but other people will think that this is a sophisticated men’s magazine. I think that people would think that it was a sophisticated magazine because it has been an established magazine for a long time so this means that any judgements against the magazine have been abolished. What values are offered, either directly or indirectly, by the text? GQ has many values which are offered on the front cover, for example it directly offers men the chance to be able to dress with the best styles in 2011 and offers you the ability to be able to dress like Ryan Gosling. All the values are offered directly, none of them are offered indirectly, and somewhat subtly, to the audience. This links with the “Look sharp. Live smart” slogan, this is because this gives the impression that everything they offer is smart and sharp… much like the slogan, if they indirectly offered any values then it would become hazy and not clear.
