2 Year 8 Prospectus 2015 Introduction Parents and students of Year 7, This booklet outlines the courses provided for you at Maitland High School in Year 8, 2015. You will notice that most of the curriculum involves mandatory study, meaning that there is only a very limited amount of subject choice available. This is because the NSW Department of Education and Communities (DEC) and the Board of Teaching & Educational Standards (BOSTES), which develops all the courses for schools from Kindergarten to the Higher School Certificate, have very clear study requirements for students in Years 7 to 10. The mandatory study requirements apply particularly to core subjects , such as English, Mathematics and Science, which in government high schools must be studied for a total of 500 hours between Years 7 and 10. In the area of Human Society and its Environment, Australian History / Australian Geography / Civics, must be studied satisfactorily for at least 400 hours. Similarly Personal Development, Health and Physical Education must be studied in each year between Years 7 and 10 for a total of 300 hours. Additionally, BOSTES requires students to study general experience courses in Visual Arts, Music, Technology and Languages. Most schools, like Maitland High, elect for students to complete the general experience course requirements in Years 7 and 8, as a preparation for their choices of elective courses in Years 9 and 10. This information is important, not just because it explains the limited course available to students for Year 8. It is also essential for students and parents to be aware that even in Year 8 courses must be completed satisfactorily to meet the requirements at the end of Year 10. This applies to both core subjects and to the general experience courses outlined above. Students who fail to comply with satisfactory study requirements (i.e. to follow the approved course; to apply themselves with diligence and sustained effort; to meet some or all of the course outcomes) will be warned by letter to their parents/caregivers, in time to make the necessary improvements. Such warnings are very important because students cannot progress to Year 9 if satisfactory study requirements are not met. Fortunately, this does not happen often, although we all need to be mindful of such possibilities. On a more positive note, I congratulate Year 7 on a successful commencement of their secondary studies, and counsel them to take advantage of the elective opportunities in Year 8, by ‘tasting’ courses that they are interested in, have skills in, and think they might wish to pursue as electives in Years 9 and 10. This will ensure a good foundation for their ongoing school success. Tim Weston Principal
