Nigel’s mom first noticed the manifestation of her son’s behaviors during his second grade year. Nigel’s behaviors gradually became more aggressive in third and forth grade, and are now becoming detrimental to his social and academic development. Nigel’s mom is most concerned that her son will not ever participate in “normal” activities or conversations. Her goals for her son are to one day engage with his peers and to use his words to describe what he is feeling instead of isolating himself from her and her husband. Nigel’s mom explained that his behaviors become more prevalent at home when he’s asked to interact with her and his dad. When prompted to eat dinner at the dinner table or to come out of his room, he yells, spits, and screams at his parents. As these behaviors turned more aggressive, Nigel’s mom stated that they started to just “give in to him.” Despite his adamancy to avoid social interaction, Nigel does enjoy playing video games with his older cousin at home. With the hope of her son’s future in mind, Nigel’s mom shared that he once had a friend named Natalie as a younger boy. They loved reading books together and shared a common passion for more advanced literature. Natalie moving to an advanced placement school was the moment when she realized that Nigel was not the same as other kids. The ultimate goal for Nigel’s mom is to see an improvement in Nigel’s behaviors at school and home. She doesn’t want him to hurt his peers and knows deep down that Nigel doesn’t want to hurt anyone either. She fears that he will miss out on a “normal” life if his behaviors aren’t addressed now. Based on the Motivation Assessment Scale, Nigel uses his behaviors to obtain tangible activities such as, “quiet time” in the corner to read, and tries to escape from group work to isolate himself from his peers. It appears that Nigel is not using his behaviors to seek attention, but to avoid attention from the rest of the class and his parents. A positive strategy to help support Nigel’s behavior could include: incorporating independent work time into Nigel’s workday. Nigel is a strong student and prefers to work alone. Balancing group work with independent work time could help Nigel decrease his problem behaviors.
